Bizâncio e a Primeira Cruzada

Um tema recorrente na historiografia da Primeira Cruzada descreve o imperador bizantino solicitando um pequeno contingente ao papa Urbano e recebendo vastos exércitos que escapavam a seu controle. A cruzada foi, assim, inteiramente inesperada, sendo o imperador alheio à sua gênese. Estudos recentes, no entanto, contestaram essa tese, e novas abordagens surgiram. Uma segunda teoria sustenta que houve uma guinada inédita na política externa, com o imperador profundamente envolvido em sua origem e exercendo um papel central na formação de seus ideais e objetivos. A terceira abordagem, mais modesta em alcance, sustenta que, embora certamente envolvido, sua atuação não representou uma inovação disruptiva, mas sim a extensão de uma resposta já consagrada a situações de crise, que envolvia buscar aliados externos, oferecer-lhes incentivos financeiros e até incutir um elemento espiritual nos acordos. Foi o uso da última dessas táticas padrão que resultou em mal-entendidos entre o imperador bizantino e os cruzados.
